Common Questions

Is this a real psychological profiling system?

Yes. The Personality Assessment System was developed by John W. Gittinger for the CIA's Technical Services Staff beginning in the 1950s. It is documented in declassified CIA records available through the CIA Reading Room, published academic literature, and the Personality Assessment System Foundation (PASF). Our analysis applies this publicly available framework to publicly observable political behavior.

Do you analyze the Right as well?

Our current focus is on the cognitive architecture of progressive political movements and figures. The PAS framework applies equally to the Right (the Externalizer-Regulated profile, for instance, describes much of the conservative base), and we reference Right-side profiles where relevant for comparison. Future content may expand this focus.

Can you profile specific named individuals?

We work with archetypal profiles based on publicly observable behavioral patterns. We do not claim to have administered the WAIS to any public figure. Our profiling is inferential, based on Gittinger's established correlations between PAS types and observable behavior. We note this distinction clearly in all analysis.

How can I learn more about the PAS?

Start with our PAS Framework page for an overview. For primary sources, the CIA Reading Room hosts declassified PAS review documents. The Personality Assessment System Foundation (PASF) at pasf.org maintains the most comprehensive public archive of Gittinger's work and case studies.
